Cathedral prayers for Princess Diana

Thursday August 30th 2007

Prayers for the late Princess Diana will be said at Evensong on Sunday September 2 in St Anne’s Cathedral, Belfast, at 3.30pm.

Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant for Belfast, Lady Romaine Carswell, and several of the Lord Lieutenants and Deputy Lieutenants from other counties will be among those attending the service.

The Dean of Belfast, Dean Houston McKelvey, said: “We were requested by the Lord Lieutenants to mark the occasion and the best way we felt to do so was to include elements of remembrance and thanksgiving within our normal service of Sunday evening worship.”

The Cathedral Choir will sing John Rutter’s composition of “The Lord Bless You and Keep you.” The hymns will include one of the Princess’s favourites, ‘I vow to thee my country.”

The Dean added: “The main emphasis however will be in our prayers. We shall be using the two prayers written for the anniversary service in the Guards' Chapel by the Archbishop of Canterbury, and we shall be praying for the Queen and all the members of the Royal Family.”

The service will conclude by 4.15pm and as with all services in the Cathedral, everyone is welcome. There is parking for those attending the service in the Cathedral precincts.
