A young lady who is an active member of St Polycarp’s Parish, Finaghy, in the Diocese of Connor, represented the United Kingdom at the Miss Universe contest in Los Angeles, California.
Julie Doherty, 18, who lives in Finaghy, is assistant Brownie leader at St Polycarp’s and a former member of the church badminton club.
Also competing in Los Angeles was 19-year-old Melanie Boreham, a member of St Patrick’s, Drumbeg, in the Diocese of Down, who was representing the Republic of Ireland.
The contest involved 84 other entrants from all over the world, and was preceded by two weeks of intense media interviews, rehearsals and preparations.
Julie said the experience was ‘amazing.’
“Being given the chance to meet and make friends with more than 80 contestants from all over the world and learn about their countries and cultures was a unique experience not to be forgotten,” she said.
The contest was won by Miss Puerto Rico.
