Agherton Parish Men’s Society, Portstewart, has launched an appeal to help disabled children and their mothers in Minsk, Russia.
During January, members of the society will be collecting good quality, clean, used clothes to be sent to Minsk where the items will be used in an orphanage.
The orphanage caters for disabled children and their mothers who are often turned away from home by fathers when the children’s disabilities are discovered.
Items required are clothes for ladies, men, teenagers, children and infants. Duvets and blankets are also welcome. The warmer the clothes, the better.
Items should be placed in a strong, plastic bag with a label listing the contents and stating whether they are for ladies, men or the age group of the child. Clothes for the different groups should not be placed in the same bag.
The collection will be made during January 2007 and the container lorry will leave in early April. The cost of transport is between £4,000 and £5,000 per lorry load, and all donations towards the transport costs will be gratefully received.
