NI walker needed for Christian Aid campaign

Tuesday March 6th 2007

Christian Aid is seeking to enlist a representative from a church in Northern Ireland to join a core group of 20 campaigners on a march to raise awareness of climate change and the link to poverty.

The march will take the campaigners from Bangor (Co Down) to Troon by yacht and thereafter on foot through Scotland, England and Wales, ending at the Stock Exchange in Central London.

The event is due to run from July 13 until October 2 this year, and will highlight the need for the UK to drastically cut carbon emissions and in particular the huge multi-national companies whose carbon emissions are significantly higher than the national average.

Participants will be expected to walk for 15 miles per day, six days per week, all accommodation and food will be arranged by and covered by Christian Aid.  Special events and rallies will be organised at specific locations along the route and it is anticipated other marchers will join the core group of 20 along the route.  Knowledge of the issues around climate change would be helpful and training will be given on Christian Aid’s core campaign messages.

Anyone wanting more information should email NI co-ordinator Deborah Doherty on ddoherty@christian-aid.org for an application form, or ring her on 028 9038 1204 or 07803 280853.
