Second annual McDonald Lecture in St George’s

At the McDonald Lecture are, from left: Canon Dick McDonald, Desney Cromie (Chair of the Pastoral Support Team), Bishop Alan Abernethy and Prof Martyn Percy.The second annual McDonald Lecture, organised to mark the pioneering work of the Rev Canon Dick McDonald in counselling, clerical formation and spiritual direction, took place on Saturday November 3.

The speaker was the Rev Canon Professor Martyn Percy, Principal, Ripon College, Cuddesdon and The Oxford Ministry Course, Oxford, who addressed the subject: Strong feelings in a Polite Church: Leadership and Emotional Intelligence in Congregations

Prof Percy is the author of many books and a regular contributor to newspapers and radio. His most recent book is Why Liberal Churches are Growing (Continuum 2006). His other works include Clergy: The Origin of the Species.

He is the only non-fictional living person mentioned in Dan Brown’s the Da Vinci Code.

The lecture, held in St George’s Parish Church, High Street, Belfast, was chaired by the Rt Rev Alan Abernethy, Bishop of Connor.

It was organised by the Joseph Project, a counselling service for members of the Church of Ireland Diocese of Connor.
