A new War Memorial plaque was dedicated as part of the Act of Remembrance at Holy Trinity, Woodburn, on Sunday November 11.
It was presented by Captain Austin Ardill who recently celebrated his 90th birthday.
Captain Ardill served with distinction during World War Two and was awarded a Military Cross for his bravery on the Greek island of Leeros.
He was a prisoner of war for 18 months before being freed by the advancing allies after the D-Day landings.
Captain Ardill has in the past shared his war experiences with different groups within Holy Trinity. He has spoken movingly of the death of many of his school friends during the war and quoted often from his favourite hymn ‘Amazing Grace.’
