Pupils at Hazelbank Primary School in Ballymena have raised £153 for Connor Diocese’s Yei School Project.
The children were inspired to raise the money through a non-uniform day after a recent visit from Bishop Hilary of Yei and his wife Mama Joyce.
The pupils first heard about Bishop Hilary’s work last June, when they were guests at a service in St Patrick’s Broughshane. On this occasion the collection was shared between Yei Diocese and the Children’s Hospice. At the service Archdeacon Stephen Forde, chair of Connor’s Council for Mission, spoke about Bishop Hilary and the link between Connor and Yei.
Bishop Hilary visited the school in person during his recent stay in Connor. When the children heard that pupils in Yei did not have pencils and other basic items for school, they resolved to do something to help. They decided on a non-uniform day and every pupil brought in £1 for Yei.
The Bishop and his wife commented on the vitality of the children who were thrilled by their visit. It was part of a hectic stay in Ballymena for Bishop Hilary and Mama Joyce, who also met with Councillor M Mills, the Mayor of Ballymena.
