A new scout troop is to be formed in St Stephen’s Parish Church, Belfast.
The troop will be run by Stephen Galway, along with three former guides. Stephen was a member of St Stephen’s Scouts before the old troop folded 10 years ago due to diminishing numbers.
But Stephen is hopeful there will be enough interest among young people of St Stephen and St Luke for the new troop to flourish.
“This is a large church and there is nothing for the kids to do at this end of the road,” he said. “We have a good Sunday School and quite a few have said they would like to join the scouts if there was a local group.”
Stephen said he felt the scouting movement offered a lot to all boys and girls, whatever their age. “You learn a lot and get to try new experiences,” he said. “When I was a scout we went to camp and met new friends. It is great socially and you also learn to fend for yourself.”
Stephen hoped the new St Stephen’s troop would hold its inaugural meeting on Tuesday March 9. Anyone interested in joining should contact Stephen on 0774 9465324.
