Many of Connor’s churches will be holding special services to mark the 2011 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, which traditionally takes place from January 18-25.
Each year, a different country is invited to write the initial worship material, which can be adapted for local use. This year’s Week of Prayer for Christian Unity comes from an ecumenical group in Jerusalem.
Below are some of the services taking place in Connor Diocese to mark the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity:
Belfast Cathedral
Belfast Cathedrals’ Partnership Church Unity Week Service, St Peter’s Cathedral, Tuesday 18th January at 7.00 p.m. The preacher will be The Most Revd Richard Clarke, Bishop of Meath and Kildare and President of the Irish Council of Churches. The theme comes from an ecumenical group in Jerusalem.
Ardclinis, Tickmacrevan, Layde and Cushendun
The Revd Moreen Hutchinson will lead a service in St.Mary’s Parish of Ardclinis, Carnlough on 20 January at 7.30 p.m. The guest preacher will be Fr. Luke McWilliams P.P Cushendall.
Glengormley
Inter Church Eucharistic Fellowship (R.C. C. of I. Presb. Meth.) Celebration on Tuesday 25th January at St.Bernard’s Church Glengormley.
Greenisland
A service with local clergy/representatives from the four main denominations will take place at Greenisland Presbyterian Church on Sunday 23rd January 7.00 p.m.
South Belfast
A service involving a number of churches including St Bartholomew’s, St John’s Malone, St Nicholas’s and St Thomas’s will take place at St Brigid’s, Derryvolgie Ave on Sunday 23rd January at 7.00 p.m. The preacher will be the Revd Derek McKelvey.
St. Bartholomew's is exchanging pulpits with the Revd. Dr. Fred Munce on the morning of 23 February.
Ballygally & Cairncastle
A series of special joint services will take place from 6.30 p.m. to 7 p.m. as follows: Monday 17th January at St Joseph’s Catholic Church, Ballygally (Contact Father Aidan Kerr: 2884 1246); Tuesday 18th January at St Patrick’s Church of Ireland, Cairncastle (Contact Roger Thompson: 02858 3220); Wednesday 19th January at Cairncastle Non-Subscribing Presbyterian Church (Contact Revd Lena Cockroft: 91800690 or 07702307868); and Thursday 20th January at Cairncastle Presbyterian Church, followed by tea/coffee in the church hall (Contact Revd Anne Tolland: 2858 3268).
St Peter and St James, Belfast
On Sunday, 23rd January the Parish of St Peter and St James and Cavehill Methodist Church shall join together for a united service in Cavehill Methodist Church at 6.30 p.m.
Larne
A service to mark the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity will be held on Sunday 23rd January in the McNeil Theatre, Larne Leisure Centre at 3.00 p.m. The service will be conducted by Rev Andrew Kingston and the address by Mr Mark Durrell.
