The window in memory of the last Rev Denzil Caldwell.A new window installed in St Patrick’s, Cairncastle, in memory of the late Rev Denzil Caldwell was dedicated at a recent service by the former Dean of Belfast, The Very Rev Dr Houston McKelvey.

The service was attended by Mrs Laura Caldwell – who donated the window in her husband’s memory – together with a large number of friends and former parishioners.

The service was led by the Rev Roger Thompson, current rector of St Patrick’s, and lessons were read by former friends and colleagues Archdeacon Jack Patterson and Lt Col David Twigg.

In his sermon Canon Ken Ruddock, Connor Diocesan Curate, spoke warmly of Denzil’s friendship, highlighting his attention to visiting, thoughtful preaching and deep personal faith.

During a varied career Denzil served with the Royal Ulster Rifles for 10 years before being trained for the ordained ministry. He served curacies in Carnmoney, and Antrim & Muckamore, moving to Cairncastle in 1961 where he was rector for 29 years. He also served as chaplain in the RUR, Senior chaplain in the Royal Corps of Transport and chaplain in the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem.

The window (designed by Calderwood Glass Ltd of Newtownabbey) depicts Christ the Good Shepherd, reflecting Denzil’s faithful and caring pastoral ministry over many years.
