The Rev Mercia Malcolm, vicar of Carnmoney, will speak about the friendship of CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien at two high profile events in May.
On Monday May 20, Mercia will present an illustrated talk ‘A journey in Reconciliation: An exploration of the friendship of CS Lewis with JRR Tolkien’ as part of the contribution by Christian organisations to Community Relations Week
This year is the 50th anniversary of the death of CS Lewis, who was born in Belfast in 1898.
In her talk, Mercia will discuss the friendship of Lewis and Tolkien as a catalyst in breaking down Lewis’ inherited sectarianism. This was the subject of a project Mercia undertook during a recent sabbatical.
The Community Relations Council asked Mercia to repeat the talk on Thursday May 23 as its keynote event in Stormont for the week. Mercia will speak in the Senate Chamber in Stormont to an invitation–only audience of MLAs, senior civil servants and political advisors.
Mercia said: “It feels a bit daunting but an immense privilege and I hope to be able to say something about the opportunity Belfast may have this year to build on the link with Lewis as it is the 50th anniversary of his death in November.”
Community Relations Week 2013 takes place from May 20 to May 26, organised by the Community Relations Council, with the theme ‘Expressing Identity – Addressing Division’.
