Service of Nine Lessons with Carols at St George’s Church, Belfast

The Rev Hayden Foster,  Lord Mayor Máirtín Ó Muilleoir,  Bishop Alan Abernethy,  The Rev Brian Stewart and Fr. Alan McGuckian  at the Annual Civic Carol Service, as Gaeilge, in St George's Church, Belfast on December 15.Cumann Gaelach na hEaglaise (The Irish Guild of the Church) supported the Annual Civil Carol Service which took place in St George’s Church, Belfast on December 15 2013.

The Bishop of Connor, the Rt Rev Alan Abernethy, gave a blessing in Irish and the Lord Mayor, Máirtín Ó Muilleoir, read a lesson.

At the service Cumann Gaelach na hEaglaise launched its bilingual services book, Holy Communion and Other Services of the Church of Ireland.

Lord Mayor Máirtín Ó Muilleoir and Bishop Alan launch the Guild's bilingual services book.Dáithí Ó Maolchoille, Chair of the Irish Guild of the Church, speaking at the launch said: “The parish of St George’s should be rightly proud of their tremendous efforts to promote the greater use of Irish in their services. We also wish to commend Bishop Alan Abernethy on giving the blessing in Irish. He may not know how much this is appreciated.”

The translation of the Services of the Nine Carols was carried out by Liam Andrews and representatives from the Irish language sector also read lessons at the service.

Dúirt Dáithí Ó Maolchoille, Cathaoirleach Chumann Gaelach na hEaglaise, “Tá éacht mór déanta ag pobal Naomh Seoirse an Ghaeilge a chur chun cinn sa pharóiste. Tugann an Cumann ard mholadh dóibh. Táimid fíor–bhuíoch don Easpag Alan Abernethy freisin. Chuaigh sé ina luí orainn go mór go ndéana sé an paidir bheannachta i nGaeilge.”

Rinne an tUasal Liam Andrews an t–aistriúchán ar Sheirbhís na Naoi gCeacht mar aon le Carúil agus léigh ionadaithe ó earnáil na Gaeilge léachtaí eile chomh maith.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Cumann Gaelach na hEaglaise: The Irish Guild of the Church was founded in 1914 to (1) promote all that tends to preserve within the Church of Ireland the spirit of the ancient Celtic Church and to provide a bond of union for all members of the Church of Ireland inspired with Irish ideals, (2) promote the use of the Irish language in the Church, (3) collect from Irish sources suitable hymns and other devotional literature, (4) encourage the use of Irish art and music in the Church.
