Knitted Christmas trees draw the crowds!

Friday December 20th 2013

The beautiful knitted tree at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Monkstown. We can finally publicly unveil the end result of two unique Christmas trees knitted by the Church of the Good Shepherd, Monkstown, and St Oliver Plunkett’s Parish, Lenadoon.

In the months leading up to December, the ladies of the two churches, one joint Church of Ireland / Methodist and one Roman Catholic, knitted green squares which were to be fashioned into full sized trees!

This innovative idea really caught people’s imagination and brought the communities together, as Priest in Charge of the Church of the Good Shepherd, the Rev Arlene Moore acknowledges. “In this divided society of ours wouldn’t it be great to have a Christmas tree which carried the real message of peace and goodwill at Christmas,” she said.

Martin Magill, Sacred Heart PS principal, and the Rev Canon Dr Heather Morris, Methodist Church President, share the laughter at a coffee morning at the Church of the Good Shepherd. The trees have been available for viewing during Advent, and a special coffee morning on Thursday December 19 hosted by the Thursday Craft & Fellowship Group of COGS and some of the members of St Oliver Plunkett’s, Lenadoon, who were involved drew a big crowd.

Among the guests were the Rev Canon Dr Health Morris, President of the Methodist Church in Ireland and the Mayor of Newtownabbey.

After Christmas the squares will be reshaped into blankets and distributed to charities.
