Cancellation of Streetreach and Summer Madness

Wednesday March 25th 2020

Two major summer events for young people have been cancelled as a result of the coronavirus crisis.

Connor Youth Council has cancelled Streetreach which was due to take place with Mossley Parish in July 2020. The annual youth mission normally follows the Summer Madness Youth camp, which has also been cancelled

A statement from Connor Youth Council, issued on March 25, reads: “We are very disappointed that we will not be able to go ahead and facilitate this event. Under the circumstances, we do not believe that we can plan effectively for Streetreach.

“It has been an event which has developed over the past five years, seeking to honour the local parish, its community and all the participants.

“We have loved seeing so many young people sign up to take part this year, but we would encourage each of you to connect and serve in your local parish during this difficult time.”

The Youth Council is planning to resume the partnership with Mossley Parish and work alongside Mossley to deliver the event in 2021.

Anyone with questions should contact Diocesan Youth Officer Christina Baillie on christinabaillie@connordiocese.org.

The directors of Summer Madness announced the cancellation of the annual event ‘with a heavy heart’ on March 23.

“For the first time in 33 years we have found it impossible to continue with preparations for Summer Madness due to the Covid-19 crisis. This is very disappointing news for us all and we fully appreciate that hundreds/thousands of young people will be missing this very special experience in June,” the festival directors said.

They are looking at ways of sharing in a digital format some of this year’s content and thinking of how to connect again even beyond the summer. They are also be looking at the possibility of a Day of Madness in the autumn with most of the same mainstage speakers and various seminars and activities.

Pete Grieg and Hannah Heather are already lined up for 2021 (July 2-6) on the theme: Pray Without Ceasing.

“As we dream and scheme of how best to navigate the journey over the next 12 months, we do hope you can be part of it. We will let you know soon how we might be able to support each other as we plan for next year and seek to recover from this peculiar setback. Stay well and stay close to the One that gives us life,” said the Summer Madness team.
