Fun and laughter at Carnmoney Community Fellowship Club

NI Fire and Rescue firefighters from Glengormley Fire Station with the Rev Andy Heber and members of the team which organises the Carnmoney Community Fellowship Club.

There was plenty of good humoured laughter in Carnmoney Parish Hall on Wednesday afternoon, November 10, at the monthly meeting of the Carnmoney Community Fellowship Club.

The club, which is for folk of all ages, was established early in 2020, and the first two meetings proved very popular, with more than 30 in attendance each time. Meetings had to stop during the pandemic, and only resumed in October.

The club has seen the return of some of those who had previously come along, and is also welcoming new members.

The vicar of Carnmoney, the Rev Andy Heber, said the club was open to anyone in the community, with parishioners making up around half the members. “We are building up our numbers again slowly,” Andy said. “We set up the club to help with isolation. A lot of people in the area are very lonely, and the statistics bear that out.”

The club offers people the opportunity to chat, make new friends, enjoy fun activities, a cup of tea or coffee, and listen to a speaker. In October, the special guest was parishioner Helen Eccles, who read some of her monologues, and the members had a chance to try their hand at glass painting, each taking home their own hand painted jar.

At the November get together, there was a quiz, a team challenge in which the answers to questions posed by the vicar were subtly hidden in the pages of a newspaper, and, after refreshments, a visit from representatives of Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue (Glengormley). The firefighters gave a talk on fire prevention and protection, and advised people about free home fire safety checks. They took the time to answer the questions from the group, before heading off to their next call.
