Belfast Cathedral Heritage Writer-in-Residence Deirdre Cartmill is hosting a series of inspiring writing workshop.
As part of the Stories from the Crypt project, groups receive a guided tour of the Cathedral, before joining Deirdre for a writing session. She provides simple skills to make your writing come alive, and guide you as you write your own stories and poems, inspired by your tour of the Cathedral.
Deirdre said: “These relaxed and easy going workshops are suitable for people of all ages and abilities. It’s not about being perfect – it’s about having fun. I will help you build your confidence, find your voice and share your story, your way.”
There is an opportunity for some of the work to be included in a published booklet that will gather together observations, stories and poems from all the groups and individuals involved in the project.
Deirdre is an award winning poet, writer and screenwriter. She has published two poetry collections and has written for TV, stage and radio.
She has more than 20 years’ experience as a Creative Writing Facilitator working with people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. Everyone is welcome to come along.
She has run workshops for people from every background, including people with mental health issues, survivors of trauma, survivors of abuse, ex combatants, those with learning disabilities, refugees, ex addicts, those who feel stigmatised by their community, people with long term illness or disability, young people and children in care.
The combined tour and workshop runs for two hours, and up to 10 participants can attend each workshop.
To date, participants have travelled from as far away as Mayo, Dublin and Coleraine and have included people ranging from those who haven’t written before to established writers, playwrights and actors.
”The feedback so far has been fabulous. People have found it inspiring and uplifting. One person described it as a sacred pilgrimage,” Deirdre said.
