Stained-glass window workshop in St Stephen’s, Millfield

Wednesday March 12th 2025

National Churches Trust Ireland tour of St Stephen’s windows by local artist Daniel Braniff, led by Dr David Caron. Organised by Nina McNeary, Support Officer NCT Ireland in partnership with the Look North Festival.

St Stephen’s, Millfield, was one of a number of venues visited as part of a three-hour stained-glass tour through North Belfast’s historic churches on March 1.

This was organised by the National Churches Trust, and included First Belfast Non-Subscribing Presbyterian Church, St Anne’s Cathedral, Redeemer Central, and St Patrick’s.

The tour was made even more special by the presence of a relative of the Clokey family, connected to the renowned Clokey of Belfast studio, whose work has left a lasting imprint on stained-glass artistry. Additionally, a participant with a personal connection to the artist Daniel Ignatius Braniff brought an extra layer of meaning to the tour’s exploration of his stunning glasswork in St Stephen’s.

St Stephen’s is home to the largest collection of Daniel Ignatius Braniff glass on the island, and at the church, under the expert guidance of Kerrie Hanna, participants delved into the art of stained-glass in a hands-on workshop, learning traditional techniques and drawing inspiration from the stunning pieces around them.

The tour was facilitated by Kerrie, Dr David Caron, and the volunteers from Volunteer Now and was part of the Look North Festival.

Funders included The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Historic Environment Division at the Department for Communities.

The Treasure Ireland project from National Churches Trust supports historic places of worship across Northern Ireland to ensure that these remarkable buildings continue to be cared for and appreciated by future generations.

This was the project’s first journey into Ireland’s stained-glass heritage. The next session is set for March 15 in Armagh.
