The Choirs of St Bride’s Church, Kilbride, and St Nicholas’, Carrickfergus, came together for a Joint Choral Evensong Service in St Nicholas’ on Sunday June 14.

The event was organised by Beth Aiken. Beth was Director of Music in St Bride’s for five years before leaving in late 2018 to take up a musical position in St Mark’s Church, Dundela. More recently she became Director of Music in St Nicholas’, Carrickfergus.

In all three churches she has been very influential in promoting a high standard of choral music in worship. Some months ago, a suggestion was made that the choirs of St Bride’s and St Nicholas’ should combine for choral evensong and the suggestion was met by great enthusiasm from both choirs.

After some practice sessions in their respective churches, the two choirs came together on the afternoon of June 14 for a combined practice ahead of the evening service.

This began at 6.30pm and was led by the rector of St Nicholas’, the Rev Dr Chris St John, who was also cantor for the plainsong versicles, with responses being sung by the 36-strong combined choir.

The choir also sang Psalm 150 arranged by Sir CV Stanford, Magnificat and Nunc Demittis arranged by George Dyson and the anthem, Fairest Lord Jesus, arranged by Martin How. The collects were sung by Tim Wilson, Director of Music in St Bride’s. Conductors for the evening were Beth Aiken and David Monahan.

The service was preceded by organ music played by David Monahan who is also an organ scholar with the Down & Dromore and Connor organ scholarship scheme.

The service was enjoyed by all, and it is hoped that it can be repeated in the near future in a different venue.
