Prayer meeting for Ukraine

An informal evening of prayer for the ongoing situation in Ukraine will be held in St Stephen’s Parish Church, Millfield, on Wednesday March 2 at 7.30pm.

Entrance is via the carpark at the rear of the building.

Stephen Whitten from Connect Base, Connor’s North Belfast Centre of Mission, said: “This is a space to come together and lift up the people of Ukraine as well as the whole situation and its implications for the wider world to God.”

In the Carnmoney area, local man Alan Hopper, a member of Carnmoney Presbyterian Church, has been collecting items to be sent to the Ukrainian border via Romania.

Alan, a long-term supporter of three charities in Romania, said he had been overwhelmed by the response to his appeal published on his church social media pages.

Items urgently needed for refugees arriving in Romania are blankets, duvets and sleeping bags and personal hygiene items including soap, toothpaste, shower gel and sanitary items. Financial donations are also been received (Justgiving) and the money will be used by the Romanian government to cover the cost of helping people travel to stay with relatives and friends elsewhere in Europe, to pay for any refugee needing hospital treatment, and to allow refugees to buy their own essential items.

Food, clothes and shoes are not required as Alan says the Romania government can meet any need for these items among the arriving refugees.

Items can be delivered to Carnmoney Presbyterian Church at 258 Carnmoney Road, Newtownabbey between 9am and 12 noon, and should be packed in BOXES and labelled to allow the goods to be loaded onto lorries bound for Romania.

Alan says items are being transported free of charge by Romanian transport company Tarsin Transport. Collection can be arranged by calling Alan on 07754 539835.
