Tuesday January 12th 2010

The Bishop of ConnorThe Bishop of Connor, the Rt Rev Alan Abernethy, has condemned a bomb attack on a police officer in Randalstown.

The Bishop said the attack, which happened in Connor Diocese, was an assault not only on the officer but also on the wider community.

Bishop Alan stated: “I am distressed to hear of this attack on the PSNI Officer near Randalstown, which must be condemned not only for the assault on the person himself but also on the wider community.

“I wish to echo the words of Bishops Anthony Farquhar and Donal McKeown of the Catholic Diocese of Down and Connor in stating that this attack is completely contrary to the widespread desire for peace and stability in our society.

I assure the Officer, his wife and family of our support and prayers at this time.”

The Bishop reiterated these thoughts when he was interviewed on BBC Radio Ulster’s Evening Extra programme about the attack.

Constable Peadar Heffron, a Roman Catholic who speaks Irish and captained the PSNI’s Gaelic team, remains critically ill in hospital following the attack on January 8.
