Parishes plan events to celebrate South Sudan Independence

Thursday July 7th 2011

The new Republic of South Sudan will celebrate its independence on Saturday July 9 2011.

A team of young people from Lisburn Cathedral are currently staying in the Diocese of Yei, South Sudan, in a META (Mission Experience Team Abroad) visit organised by CMS Ireland as part of Connor’s ongoing partnership with Yei Diocese. The team leaves Sudan two days before independence.

David Gough of CMSI would like to make people in the Church of Ireland aware of  two events that are being held to celebrate Independence of the Republic of South Sudan.

David said: “Our partner dioceses in Ibba, Maridi, Yei, Lainya, Kajo-Keji, Rokon and Kadugli know that you and CMS Ireland will be celebrating this historical Independence Day with them.”

On Friday July 8 Kill O’ the Grange Parish is hosting a concert in celebration of South Sudan Independence. The choir of Peterhouse College Cambridge will be performing in Kill O’ the Grange Church at 8pm. The concert is free and there will be refreshments served afterwards. It is hoped to have a surprise Sudanese guest speaker on the evening. Donations will go towards supporting the teacher training of a student Edward Duku, supported in Yei Teacher Training College by Kill O’ the Grange Parish. On Sunday July 10 the Parish of Kilmore and Inch is having a Sudan Independence celebration service in Inch Parish Church at 10.30am. The guest speaker is Jane Corbett, from Dromore Cathedral, an avid Sudan supporter especially the Diocese of Maridi where she has visited many times. The service will be followed by a bread and cheese lunch. Everyone is welcome. For more information please contact Canon Cecil Wilson at cecilwilson@o2.co.uk.
