Guests included Councillor Michael Lynch (Deputy Mayor), funder representatives Ken Gibson (International Fund for Ireland) and Olga Gallagher (Rural Development Council), and other community group leaders.

The large congregation was welcomed by the Rev Roger Thompson, rector of St Patrick’s with All Saints’, who, noting the very mixed nature of the gathering, began by encouraging people to get up out of their seats and find someone who they didn’t know in order to make a new friend.

After introductory words from Councillor Lynch, the audience was treated to splendid performances from two local school choirs – Linn Primary and St Anthony’s. Speeches were made highlighting the aims of the project – to foster good relationships within and between communities and to facilitate the development and wider usage of community halls.

The commitment and effort of those who carried out the work was also acknowledged with presentations given to contractors Eddie Osborne and Gerard McGuigan (Piperhill Construction Ltd), as well as to the teams of volunteers from the parish.

Fr John Burns (St Anthony’s parish) then offered words of encouragement and gave a generous gift, before Archdeacon Stephen Forde, rector of St Cedma’s, Larne, led the act of dedication. The evening finished with refreshments in the renovated hall, while the children enjoyed juice and chocolates in church.

Mr Thompson said: “It was a wonderful evening and a real thrill to see the church buzzing with people from all sections of our community.”
