Opportunity to apply for Organ Scholarships

Wednesday February 26th 2014

The Church of Ireland Dioceses of Down and Dromore and Connor Organ Scholarship Management Board is inviting applications for scholarships for the year 2014.

Scholarships are tenable for three years, subject to assessment at the end of years one and two. Tuition is given fortnightly, free–of–charge by one of the Board’s panel of tutors, and a certificate is awarded on completion of the course.

The scholarships are intended to train musicians in the service of the Church, in the Anglican tradition, both at the organ and leading a choir, and tuition in choral training is an integral part of the course.

Previous experience of playing the organ is not necessary, but applicants must be proficient in the keyboard to approximately piano grade five or equivalent. There are no upper or lower age limits, and candidates who have previously been unsuccessful are welcome to re–apply.

Tutors are Mr Michael McCracken (Down Cathedral) and Mr Ian Mills (St Columb’s Cathedral, Londonderry).

The Board is usually able to award six scholarships annually between the two dioceses. An application form can be obtained from Diocesan Office and must be submitted by Friday March 28 with auditions held on Saturday May 24.

For further information contact Board chairman Canon David Humphries on 028 9048 2292 or honorary secretary the Rev Amanda Adams on 028 7034 3061.
