Lenten lunches in Whitehead and Islandmagee

Wednesday May 7th 2014

Rector of Whitehead and Islandmagee, the Rev Mark Taylor, presents a cheque to one of the charities to benefit from funds raised from the Lenten lunches.Lenten Lunches hosted by the United Parish of St Patrick’s, Whitehead, and St John’s, Islandmagee, have raised fantastic amounts for a number of charities.

The lunches are held every Wednesday during Lent and are very well attended and enjoyed by the local community. Many visitors return each year and old friendships are renewed.

The menu includes soup, which is prepared on the premises, fresh rolls, with the fillings generously donated by parishoners and local retailers; Jackie Wright of Spar, McMaster’s Butchers, Sainsbury’s and Tesco. The gorgeous desserts are prepared by the ladies of the parish and many litres of custard are consumed each year!

Every week a different charity is selected to benefit from the lunches, and on May 1 a £400 donation was presented to each of the following: The NI Children to Lapland Trust; the RNLI; Leukaemia & Lymphoma NI; NI Hospice; Chest Heart & Stroke; Church of Ireland Summer Madness, and Cancer Research.
