Warm welcome at Christ Church, Lisburn, for visitors from Luwero Diocese, Uganda

Christ Church, Lisburn, welcomed Bishop Wilson Kisekka from Luwero Diocese, Uganda, to the parish from July 2-6.

He was accompanied by Canon Paul Kakozza who is the Director of Education Services in the Church of Uganda.

It was the Bishop’s first trip to Northern Ireland and built on links that were established with the diocese when a parish team went to Luwero in 2012 with Fields of Life to build St Apollo School which is in Luwero Diocese.

Meetings were organised by Archdeacon Paul Dundas with Fields of Life, CMS Ireland and the Friends of Kiwoko Hospital during their visit here and Bishop Wilson and Canon Paul had an opportunity to visit Dundrum Castle and Down Cathedral to see the grave of St Patrick.

The Bishop spoke at a parish meeting on the Thursday night and preached at the two morning services on Sunday July 6. He spoke about ‘Imitating Christ by doing good’ as he preached from Ephesians 5: 1-2.

Canon Paul has a central church role in Uganda which looks after 6,000 schools in the country, and he valued time spent meeting Dr Peter Hamill, Secretary to the Board of Education NI. Canon Paul was living in Luwero when the parish team went in 2012 and 2015 and facilitated training workshops with lay readers and clergy.

The two guests travelled late on Sunday July 6 to further strengthen relationships with clergy in Bristol Diocese.

Archdeacon Dundas said: “It was a joy to welcome Bishop Wilson and Canon Paul to the parish for the first time. Richard and Janice Thompson hosted them for the four nights and our guests also had meals with parishioners.

“We pray for continued conversations to further strengthen the link with the parish and Luwero Diocese. Presently, we support the training of two ordinands through our Harvest Appeal and the Esther Project which meets each week for women to pray, along with the church at St Apollo through annual contributions.”

He continued: “We have valued the friendships with previous bishops and now hope to build on this new friendship with Bishop Wilson who was ordained Bishop just over a year ago.”
