A poignant service took place in St Anne’s Cathedral, Belfast, on Sunday afternoon, June 7, to commemorate the 110th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.

It followed a Commemorative Parade through Belfast. Both were organised by the Northern Ireland District of the Royal British Legion.

Among the guests were Dame Fionnuala Mary Jay-O’Boyle, DBE DStJ, His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant for the County Borough of Belfast; Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly; Councillor Róis-Máire Donnelly, Lord Mayor of Belfast; Joanne Bunting MLA; the Bishop of Connor, the Rt Rev George Davison; the Rev Dr Issac Thompson MBE TD DL; the Rev Peter Rutherford, (Chaplain to the Royal British Legion, Republic of Ireland); and the Rev Alan Cobain, Chaplain, 38 (Irish) Brigade.

Guests were greeted by the Dean of Belfast, the Very Rev Stephen Forde, and there was music from the Choir of Belfast Cathedral and, prior to the commencement of the service, the Band of the Royal Irish Regiment.
