Bishop Edward Darling celebrates 70th anniversary of ordination

Bishop Edward Darling was joined by family and friends at a Eucharist in St John’s, Malone, to celebrate the 70th anniversary of his ordination.
The retired Bishop of Limerick and Killaloe was ordained a deacon in St Anne’s Cathedral, Belfast on St Kilian’s Day, July 8 1956, and the special service in St John’s, where he served as rector from 1972-1985, was held on Thursday July 9.
The Eucharist was celebrated by Bishop Edward’s son, the Rev Colin Darling, rector of Ballymore and Clare, Tandragee, Diocese of Armagh, and an address was given by the Rev Stephen Lowry, former rector of Killaney and Carryduff, Diocese of Down and Dromore
Bishop Edward was a member of Killaney and Carryduff until his move back into the Parish of St John’s, Malone, last year.
In November last year, a service was held in in St John’s, Orangefield, where the Bishop had served as a curate, to mark the 40th anniversary of Bishop Edward’s consecration as a Bishop. Colin presided at that service also. The preacher then was Bishop David McClay, and the readers were Canon Stephen Fielding, Canon Stuart Lloyd, and Rt Rev Robin Eames, former Archbishop of Armagh.
Colin said the 70th anniversary had been marked by a quiet Communion Service, attended by family, friends and former parishioners.
“The one sadness for my dad was my mum Patricia was unable to be there. She has been by his side and has supported him all the way,” Colin said.
Bishop Darling, 93, and Patricia have been married for 68 years and have five children.
