‘Puddleglum and Hopeless Mission’ – by the Rev Andrew Irwin

Friday October 30th 2026

The Rev Andrew Irwin.

The Rev Andrew Irwin, rector of St Paul’s & St Barnabas, Belfast, and a member of the Church and Society Commission, has shared a reflection entitled Puddleglum and Hopeless Mission.

This is a follow-up to an article Andrew wrote last year entitled Outside the City Walls: Homelessness, Hope, and the Church’s Calling. Its publication followed last December’s De Paul Celebration of Life service, hosted by St Paul’s & St Barnabas, which remembered those who had died while experiencing homelessness or profound social vulnerability during the previous year.

Andrew said Puddleglum and Hopeless Mission develops those reflections on hope and faithful Christian witness in places like North Belfast, drawing on C S Lewis’s The Silver Chair.
